10 Tips For An Impromptu Getaway

If you’ve been travelling for quite some time now, I know that there are times that you’ve been preparing for a particular travel schedule with all the things that you need to do –  itinerary, outfits to wear, activities, everything and so on. But you know what? Sometimes the best adventures are unplanned! The spontaneity of unplanned adventures makes everything less complicated.

Actually going on a trip taught me a few things as well. So this post is about sharing both of those things—the practical and frugal way to have a great, impromptu getaway, and what personal experience has taught me about making it even better.

1. Choose your destination.

Seriously, don’t spend a lot of time agonizing on where to go. Last-minute getaways should not break the bank or stress you out. Pick a destination and go. But don’t go too far. If you’re not sure on where to go, pick your top five spots, write them each on a piece of paper, stick them in a jar, shake it up, and pull one out.

2. Be Flexible.

If you have the flexibility, the best last-minute travel deals will be in your favor.

3. Download travel apps.

There are a ton of great travel apps to use to help you plan your trip. See: 9 BEST Free Travel Apps You Must Use + 36 + Best Apps To Use When You Travel

4. Know your destination whereabouts.

Research the destination on your way. While you’re on the plane, train, ferry or car, look for things to do in the area. Be sure to check out Instagram. The locals and other travel lovers have already posted things to do in that destination (use the location’s hashtags to find things to do/best places to eat).

5. Browse online reviews.

Social media is a GREAT way to find excellent last-minute getaways. I’ve found some awesome vacation ideas by browsing around on the various social media platforms.

6. Don’t bring everything and the kitchen sink.

Pack light only. Though it’s a process, not a goal. You can always try and get better.

Your ideal travel clothing must be durable, takes up minimal space and weight, is wrinkle-free and opaque, and matches with the rest of your clothing in style and fit.

7. Bring your travel gadgets.

Make sure to bring your journal, cameras, etc. Remember, photographs are our personal story, a timeline of our lives filled with faces and places that we love. They are our story, which we can share with others.

8. Going on a Holiday Weekend is not ideal.

This may sound like common sense, but if budgets are tight, holiday weekends are deal breakers. Even if you plan in advance, holiday rates are sure to be inflated because of the demand.

9. Make the most of your time.

Don’t get distracted by everything that is shiny around you. Not necessarily you follow a minute by minute schedule. Think about what matters most to you. Do you need to be refreshed?  Do you need to reconnect?  Do you need to have an opportunity to let loose and do something exciting?  Identify the purpose so that you can make the most of your time away.

10. Live in the moment.

Allow yourself to live like there’s no tomorrow; you have no reason not to. Living for the present is one of the best things you can do for yourself. That sense of adventure that you get from doing something spontaneous will truly make you happier.
