You’ve seen it plastered on t-shirts, coffee mugs and inspirational posters: “I bend so I don’t break.” What does it actually means? When I joined yoga class my intention is to lose weight and be fit, lo and behold yoga taught me more than that.
It was my first day as well as my first time to attend a yoga class. I chose the corner side – you know the feeling when you enter the room, you tried to look at someone’s eye and smile, so quiet that you can’t talk to your neighbor because everybody can hear, that awkward feeling – because you feel like you don’t know anything while some are stretching on their own and some of them are on their split poses, some are in supine position. Somehow, deep inside me, telling myself that one day, I’ll be like them too. I can split, I can do the head stand and crow pose. Thus, it really motivates me to keep coming to the class regularly.
However, along the journey – I learned something:
We must maintain a relationship with ourselves.
Much like the relationships we tend to with others, we must also maintain a relationship with ourselves. This is often referred to as the most important relationship. We have to have compassion, perseverance, discipline and goals to uphold the love we have for ourselves. In the bend of a pose, in the bend of emotion, and in the bend of a service we find the stability we need for our life. A happy, healthy and strong life.
In life, we cannot escape pain, difficulty, failure, tragedy, and heartache. Sooner or later it will find us despite our best efforts to protect ourselves. Instead of trying to bob and weave what life throws at us, I’d rather have the comfort of knowing that I can take life’s best shot and be able to get back up and move forward. To me, that’s empowerment. Having that kind of personal fortitude and resilience is a game changer. Instead of being dogged by fear and uncertainty, you will have inner peace and confidence that you will survive. All you have to do is bend – because you know God can hear you and He’s with you all the time.
While it is important to consider your heart and mind to your healthy journey – taking care of your joints is crucial, especially if you’re physically active; even if you aren’t experiencing any issues right now. As we age, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain joint health, and I don’t know about you, but I ain’t gettin’ any younger, people! If you do nothing else to help your joints, do at least two things: take your Procosa every day, and simply move your body. Even if you’re not exercising, moving your joints as much as possible throughout the day is key. The more you move, the less stiffness you’ll have. If you’re sitting at a desk all day, take time to get up every now and then to take short walks or climb a few flights of stairs. Our bodies were meant to move and work on a daily basis, so the longer you remain in a fixed position, the more likely you are to suffer from sore muscles or joints.
